How Underground Pool Plumbing Leaks Are Found in the Lowcountry

An underground pool-plumbing leak can waste a surprising amount of water without leaving an obvious puddle. The line may run beneath a concrete deck, pavers, landscaping, or sandy soil that carries water away from the source. A structured inspection helps identify the failing part of the system before repair work begins.

Common signs of a pool-plumbing leak

  • The pool loses more water when the pump is running—or more when it is off.

  • Air bubbles return to the pool or the pump repeatedly loses prime.

  • A skimmer has weak suction or one return has reduced flow.

  • Soil, pavers, or decking stay damp, settle, or wash out.

  • The pool fails a bucket test even though no shell or fitting leak is visible.

  • Water chemistry and the automatic filler require constant attention.

These symptoms can also come from equipment, valves, seals, skimmers, lights, fittings, or the pool shell. That is why a complete inspection should rule out accessible causes before underground plumbing is blamed.

Step 1: Check the pool and equipment

The process begins with visible components. The technician inspects the equipment pad, pump, filter, valves, exposed pipe, skimmers, returns, lights, fittings, and pool surface. Dye testing may confirm a suspected shell or fitting leak. Correctly identifying an accessible leak can prevent unnecessary plumbing tests and excavation.

Step 2: Isolate the plumbing circuits

Pool systems usually contain several separate lines, such as skimmer suction, main-drain suction, returns, cleaners, spa connections, or water features. Plugs and valves are used to isolate those circuits so each one can be evaluated independently. If water loss changes when a particular line is isolated, that result helps narrow the search.

Step 3: Pressure-test the suspected lines

During pressure testing, a line is sealed and tested to determine whether it can hold pressure. A stable test supports that the line is intact; a measurable pressure loss points to a leak within that circuit. Testing should be interpreted with the rest of the system because faulty test plugs, valves, or accessible equipment leaks can affect the result.

What pressure testing can—and cannot—tell you

Pressure testing is designed to identify the failing line or circuit. It does not always identify the exact break point beneath a deck. Depending on the property and repair plan, additional locating work may be needed before cutting concrete or digging. In some cases, the practical solution is to repair, reroute, or abandon an unused line rather than open a large area.

Why diagnosis comes before digging

Guessing based only on a wet spot can lead to unnecessary deck damage because escaping water may travel through soil before reaching the surface. Line isolation and pressure testing provide evidence for the repair decision. The result is a smaller search area, a clearer estimate, and a better chance of avoiding needless excavation.
